THE LOG HOUSE
The Log House was
built around 1705 by John Hickman. It
passed to the Moore and Downing families.
Thomas Downing left it to the Borough in 1947.
In 1990 the Historical Society restored and relocated
the structure to preserve it. DAPI
encountered several entities in this location, including an
old man who values his privacy, and a woman at the
fireplace. You’ll never look at the
upstairs windows again without wondering who is looking back
at you.

Alert 1 and Minquas
Fire Companies
Downingtown has two
firehouses, Alert 1 and Minquas. Alert
Fire Company No. 1 was formed in 1887, and Minquas Fire
Company was organized in 1907. The
current location of Alert 1 is the third headquarters of the
company, with the groundbreaking in September of 1940.
The Minquas Company is in a new
station that is located on the same property as the original
firehouse. Both firehouses have stories
of unexplained noises and happenings, and rumors of old
members who have not let a little thing like death stop them
from performing their duties.

Downingtown Library
The Downingtown
Library was founded in 1876. The current
building was once the Home of a prominent local doctor.
There are many ghost stories associated with the
library. In the back room, books have
been known to fly off the shelves. Who
watches the street from the attic? Who
stands at a window that no longer exists?
Do ghostly pets romp through the building?
Who is lurking in the basement?

Thomas Moore House
The Thomas Moore
house was built in 1720 as a personal residence, and is
believed to be the second oldest surviving house in town.
It was converted to an inn or “Tea House” prior to
the Revolutionary War. During the Civil
War, it was a stop on the Underground Railroad, with a
hiding room for slaves on the third floor and a secret
tunnel that connected it to the library building.
Are the mysterious noises a sign that some of the
former residents refuse to leave?
